“You can’t explain why you like something. The bigger question for me was always to the people asking me to explain. [I’d say], ‘Why don’t you want to hear this?’ I love finding out why people don’t love things. And if you ask people why they don’t like things, particularly when they get into this sort of culture box, you find out that they’re not liking things because of what people are going to think about them, and not because of what the things actually sound like.”
Stew, on how people like music or don’t like music because they think other people think they should like or dislike it. (via nprfreshair)
I LOVE this because it’s something I’ve been trying to work on since High School. After encountering so many different people from so many different places this past semester I’ve become a lot better though at simply stating my likes and dislikes because most people have no background from which to criticize your music. If I’m talking to my best friend in Korea, Kim (she’s from Germany), she’s not going to know enough about, say, Chester French, to be like, “They’re lame and sold out. Eeww.” She’s going to listen to them and either like or dislike their jam. But without the preconceived notions there’s no judgement - just a personal preference. I like to try to go about all new things that way, and remind myself that people who will make fun of me for what I like aren’t worth it in the end and are only stomping out their own opportunities for growth.
